Cube form studies

Study of the relationship between the many and the one, the part and the whole, through construction of 3.5 " cubes

Through additive construction in the linear and planar forms, I was able to emphasize the positive and negative space of the internal structures.

Through subtraction in solid forms, I am able to reveal and expose defining features from the object. In one model I set out to highlight the grains of the wood by deepening these channels.

8" HYBRID CUBE

Experimentation in Solid, Linear, and Planar mediums

To construct a hybrid cube involved the combination of multiple mediums and materials.

I was particularly interested in a form in which each 8" x 8" layer had a 1.25" x 1.25" section removed from one side and replaced on the opposite edge. I later wanted the viewer to be able to look down these "tunnels" and see out from one side to the other. Both of these design considerations were influenced by my study of the interaction between positive and negative spaces.

I experimented with Rock-ite powdered cement with the construction of multiple molds as a solid base of structure.  Next sheets of 3/16" Oak wood sheets and Plexiglass were lasercut as planar and linear extrusions of form.

The resulting cube contains four unique layers which can be stacked and rearranged to create an endless combination of interesting geometric patterns.
