An imperfect art?

I had never fully realized the processes behind glassblowing, a true art form. One afternoon I could watch for hours as molten sand is transformed into objects of permanence.

One of the things that fascinates me about glass as a material is the precision craft of it. Split second decisions must be made and with a team of glass blowers the hand off in the process must be seamless. It is a very unforgiving way of form making where a single mistake could become irreversible.

I always am very slow to subtract from a form, such as in my rotational form project from the past semester. I have always followed the rule of thumb "measure twice, cut once". But glass blowing is the prime example of beauty that is produced on the fly. There may be imperfections but they are artifacts of uniqueness. As I continue to design, I have come to value unintended results not as failures but as points of departure.
