In the present world, 3D printers are becoming ingrained in manufacturing. Yet when it comes to making artistic or photographic prints we still use 2D inkjet printing. An artist named Justin Guariglia wants to make the bridge between these two worlds. Imagine a photograph that seemed to pop out at you, something you could visualize and feel. Justin has found a way to use a printer system to add layer upon layer of acrylic paint to make his art and photographs rise up off of the page. Another advantage to this process as he points out is the advantage of three dimensional objects in longevity; their greater resistance to decomposition and decay of the print over time. With a standard 2d print, dust quickly accumulates and depending on the paper could rip or deform easily.

What makes a painting great? Something greater is achieved when the medium reaches out from the page. From experience, paintings stand the test of time (albeit with needed restorations eventually), whereas prints usually only survive the long run if they sit shielded by glass. Imagine in the future three dimensional art that we can interact with, that takes you into the world of a photograph. The possibilities of design and artistic expression through this medium are endless.
