Watches are everywhere. They are a functional measurement of our daily schedules. They can be symbols of luxury or elegance. Some are simple, and some are decadent. One aspect that intrigues me about watches is the range of design choices and what eventually becomes available to the consumer. If you were to walk in to most any store in a mall you could find both inexpensive plastic watches all the way to classic Rolex's. Even so the fundamental design does not vary all that greatly, with the two main options being digital, or the tried and true three hands and twelve hour markings.
Of course you can go online to find unconventional and unique designs, but they themselves fly under the radar to the majority of consumers who would never know there were more options. These sometimes one-of-a-kind designs can even cost as much or greater than a new car. My main interest is why such groundbreaking changes from the norm do not go to the main market in this field. It is certainly not for a lack of innovation, but most likely the risk in profit manufactures feel when altering a successful tradition. I believe products well designed exude understanding of function, and it will be very interesting to see how the wristwatch transitions in the future.
