Products for Privacy

Objects can be designed for many reasons: as a utility, a collector's item, and in some nontraditional cases, for privacy. The Ishu scarf is intended to safeguard the private lives of celebrities, by combating the paparazzi through design. The scarf uses retro reflective materials to deliberately underexpose flash photographs. There are a few ways to get around this by shooting in manual flash or by correct distancing from the subject, but the increased time and effort largely negates the issue of quick and unwanted photography attacks. The Ishu is a greatly needed first step in design for seclusion and would seem a breath of fresh air for those wanting to avoid the limelight.

A product like Ishu exemplifies the valuable lesson of designing not for only for ownership, but design for living. In this case it can be something as simple as a fashion accessory, but the market for privacy will certainly change in unexpected ways in the future.
