Deep in the recesses of the Infiniti design department lives the Prototype 9 concept racer. This all-electric vehicle uses the Nissan Leaf's power train but kicks up the personality. The Prototype 9 takes inspiration from 1930s era German and Italian racecars. A brainchild of head Infiniti designer Alfonso Albaisa, Prototype 9 was created around a reimagined timeline of automobiles in Japan. If in the 30s and 40s Japan had ventured into the racing scene, this car might have been a rare and classic antique today. This is a vision of the future with complete inspiration from the past.
The Prototype 9 is no slouch however; while it draws on nostalgia of vintage cars, underneath is packed full of the best current electric power train's have to offer. On the track the working prototype is projected to have a max speed of 105 mph. Sit down in the cockpit and you will not find modern amenities. Keeping true to the racing spirit, you will find only 3 simple analog gauge clusters, and a "windshield" that would not block anything coming your way. This prototype, while highly unlikely to make it to market drives home the point that current technology and the push for electric vehicles does not mean we have to compromise the style and rich history of racing. This is driving as it is meant to be.
